Exclusive Interview: Jelly Chats About Music, Influences, And More

If you have yet to hear about Jelly, you may be missing out on the most unique and talented K-pop group out right now. Jelly is a mom trio making their dreams come true and if that doesn’t already impress you, these women have remained dedicated to their families while still being able to have some fun and let loose through their music. T

heir new track, ‘Shake It Like A Mutha,’ channels this energy and even features Korean-American artist MYK to maintain the K-pop spirit. These empowering women are making waves in the music industry and are ready to let the world know. In an exclusive interview with CelebMix, Jelly opened up about this single, the group itself and more.

How did Jelly form and what inspired its name?

Jelly formed while Jennie invited her friend Yume to a weekly Kpop dance class for exercise. Later, Yume invited her friend Emily to join our group. Our love for music and K-pop, in general, led to the idea of creating our own band of powerful women who can do it all. We were juggling marriage, motherhood, and work.

The name Jelly was inspired by our initials J, E, and Y. We added two Ls which stands for “love” and “life” and it became Jelly. Jelly has so many meanings to us. Jelly means to be preserved and staying young, fresh, and sweet no matter how old you get. Jelly is also a new way of saying dope, cool, sweet, or awesome.

What can you tell us about your latest single ‘Shake It Like A Mutha’ and its message?

‘Shake It Like A Mutha’ is a fun anthem directed at moms, but ultimately for everyone. We used our experiences from marriage and motherhood for the lyrics, but the song is for anyone who works hard and loves who they are and what they do, but who needs a break sometimes. ‘Shake It Like A Mutha’ is giving yourself “me time” to let loose and have fun once in a while.

How do you balance being mothers and also having a career in music?

As Jennie likes to put it, our music career is like our third child.  We prioritize and make time for it just as we do for our other children. We’re trying to share our time equally between everyone and everything going on in our lives. It is a constant juggle, but if you’re passionate about something and love it, you’ll find a way to make time.

What advice would you give to mothers afraid to chase their dreams?

We would like to tell mothers that it’s important to take time for themselves. Don’t be afraid to make time for what makes you happy and carve out time in your schedule to chase your big dream. A lot of times women lose themselves or their identities when they become moms, wives, career women, etc… We’re definitely guilty of this too. But, being committed to living your life and pursuing your passion will only bring more love and joy to yourself and your family. Also, we’ve realized that moms can often feel that it is too late for them to chase their dreams – but it is never too late as long as you love it and it brings you joy.

We are big fans of Beyonce, Cardi B, Blackpink, Hyolyn, and Bruno Mars just to name a few.
